Making the most of your fall mini

It's the time of year again! School starts again, the days get shorter, we can finally open our windows for that fresh air in the house and in our cars, AND FALL MINI'S ARE BACK.

For the longest time, Fall has been such a favorite season, and these mini sessions have a big part of that. I get so giddy thinking about the families we have served over the years, and how we get to help preserve all those cute little faces that makes your house a home. This is our 5th year doing mini's and we're very excited to be having them at Lake St Clair Metropark this year on October 25th 2025!

Now, if you made it to this blog, you're probably wondering how to make the most of your time during your mini session. So let's get to it-

It all starts with setting the stage. When you tell your family about the session, make it feel more like fun and less like work. For example, instead of saying "we're have a photo shoot, and you need to smile." Say something like, "we're meeting one of my friends at a park today and she is bringing her camera." This will ultimately perk interest and make it sound a little more exciting!

On shoot day, try and make it to the park 5 minutes early so you don't feel like you're rushing out of the car, and can take a breather for just a second. Remember, whatever happens works out. So if they kids are just acting crazy- let them. We will do our best to get formal portraits in the beginning, however if the littles need to run out some energy first, then let them. On that note- that is the attitude when coming into the session- Let them.

Life is short, we all know this- and getting authentic smiles, giggles, and playtime is gold. Interact with the kids, run around with them and let your innner kid have fun for the shoot! Heck! If you want to bring halloween costumes, then bring it! Biggest thing- let those little personalities shine without trying to force a smile or sitting still because that can burn a lot of energy and time during the session.

On outfit note, I always say wear something that feels authentic and comfortable. Start with you (because kids have so many options nowadays it's literally ridiculous). Find something that feels reaaaally good and moveable. You deserve your moment- I see you. I see how hard you work. You should get some spotlight put back on you. I mean, you- you're booking the shoot that will become a core memory- you deserve to feel like a star, not just a fill-in. Pick your outfit first. From there, look for coordinating colors, or prints with your main color in it and have fun with it.

If you need a little assistance on outfit picking, feel free to reach out and I will be more than happy to lend a hand!

BUT in short- do the work upfront days in advance. Then when it comes shoot time, let alllllll -- I mean ALLLLLLL of the preconceived ideas and force go and let the story unfold the way it should. 20 minutes-- you have 20 minutes of time just for us to move you around and direct and let you have candid playtime with your family. In return, you get back some of the most fun and memorable photos ever.
